Norwood Public Schools
Time Change
The Norwood School Committee voted to approve new start times for the district's eight schools, with the changes to be implemented at the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
One of the ways the School Committee determined this vote was to send surveys to the community. The surveys were not transparent about the exact start times, were not sent out in multiple languages, and did not ask a straightforward question of whether community members were "for or against this change."
This site is dedicated to gathering factual information to support our community members who are in opposition to this change. The purpose of this site is to be sure we reach our community members who may not be on social media, that are in opposition to the proposed school start time change.
Why are we concerned
The Community was not heard
While the vote to change the school times was last year, the fact that so many people are speaking up now shows that what was happening was not shared adequately with the community.
The surveys that were sent to parents did not ask any direct questions about a position against or for the time change.
The teachers are not in favor of the time change
The survey that went out to the teachers did have a question about how they feel about the time change. The majority do not want to time change. The Teachers Union was not involved during the process as stated in their contracts. They formed a subcommittee to express their concerns to the School Committee. The subcommittee has reached out to teachers and has found that the start time change will greatly impact many of the teachers in a negative way. The union made it clear to the School Committee. This was never made public.
The survey was not equitable/accessible
The surveys were only sent out in English, with no accessible option.
